I tell ya why is it that people can't just know and embrace history? We have a group protesting the name of a building on the college campus here in town. Really do you not have more than to worry about whose feelings might or might not get hurt or who would or would not be offended on a daily basis??
The hall, which was built to house male law students and graduate students, was named for William Stewart Simkins, who taught at The University of Texas at Austin School of Law from 1899 until his death in 1929. Simkins was well known for his ties to the Klu Klux Klan after the Civil War. So really the diversity council is going to change the name of a hall because he had ties to the Klu Klux Klan?? Does that make students not want to attend the university? They probably have no clue to be honest. Also in recent years, statues of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Cesar Chavez, Barbara Jordan and Earl Campbell have been erected in prominent locations on campus. Is this not enough for diversity?? I just don't get it and it somewhat makes the hairs on my arm raise. For god's sake it is history it has made us who we are today. That is like me saying I am not going to drive down Martin Luther King Blvd. because he was a black man. Well truth be he is a huge part of history he had a opinion and he voiced it. So be it!~
I am well aware that times have changed ALOT but I still think it is awful that these people get on these bandwagons and slowly take pieces of our history away piece by piece by piece...and we sit and allow it! Like Tom & Jerry cartoons the picaninny was removed and a huge speech by our friend Whoopie Goldberg prior to the cartoon (previous blog post), some of the history pieces have been changed in our schools or better yet just left out, now we are changing names of buildings too. Maybe it would make our kids be more educated to have to look the guy up and know why it was named that to begin with not to mention my 3 year old child turned to me before his cartoon started and asked "what is a picaninny?" ...not sure he would have even noticed had our wonderful friend Whoopie not brought to the whole world's attention. Come on people it is our history quit taking it so personal and embrace it. Good or bad, it is what it is and you are NOT going to change the past my friend...
